Thermal Energy Engineering Lab

Research topics

Our laboratory studies thermal energy transport and conversion. Based on heat transfer engineering, we investigate thermal-fluid phenomena mainly through experiments and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations, aiming at applications to high-performance heat exchangers for heat pumps and refrigeration/air-conditioning systems, heat pipes, and other advanced cooling devices.

CFD Analysis of Gas-Liquid Phase Separation and Phase-Change Phenomena

We develop computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models to accurately reproduce gas-liquid two-phase flows involving interface deformation and breakup, as well as phase-change phenomena centered on condensation. These models are intended to support the design of chemical processes involving gas-liquid mixtures and heat transfer equipment involving boiling and condensation. In collaboration with other research institutions, we work on improving numerical accuracy through the examination of computational schemes and on modeling phase-change and heat-flux phenomena.

Flow and Phase-Change Heat Transfer in Microchannels

We experimentally investigate phase separation characteristics of gas-liquid two-phase flows and boiling heat transfer in microchannels with hydraulic diameters below 1 mm. As heat exchangers become smaller and more efficient in refrigeration and air-conditioning systems, understanding flow and heat transfer phenomena in microchannels is increasingly important. We combine pressure and temperature measurements with high-speed visualization and image analysis to clarify the underlying mechanisms.

Heat Transfer Characteristics of Heat Transport Devices

With the miniaturization of electronic devices, increasing heat generation density, nonuniform temperature distributions in batteries and photovoltaic panels, and the need for effective waste heat utilization, efficient thermal transport and spreading devices are required in many fields. Our laboratory focuses on pulsating heat pipes and vapor chambers, aiming to improve their performance and clarify their heat transfer characteristics.

Heat Transfer Characteristics of Heat Exchangers with Complex Flow Structures

In chevron-type plate heat exchangers using corrugated plates and heat exchangers with triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) structures, repeated branching and merging of flow make the internal flow and heat transfer characteristics highly complex. In collaboration with other research institutions, we develop CFD models that reproduce experimentally observed flow and heat transfer characteristics, aiming to clarify the mechanisms and establish broadly applicable prediction methods.
